Description:
Lipitor contains atorvastatin – a synthetic lipid-lowering agent of the statin class. It is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL levels.
Indications:
Primary hypercholesterolemia (types IIa and IIb)
Mixed dyslipidemia
Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (in adults and children ≥10 years)
Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
Hypertriglyceridemia (type IV)
Primary dysbetalipoproteinemia (type III)
Prevention of cardiovascular complications in patients with CAD and risk factors
Dosage and Administration:
Adults:
Initial dose: 10-20 mg once daily
Maintenance dose: 10-80 mg once daily
Maximum dose: 80 mg/day
Children 10-17 years (with heterozygous FH):
Initial dose: 10 mg/day
Maintenance dose: 10-20 mg/day
Take at any time of day, with or without food. Monitor lipid levels regularly.
Contraindications:
Active liver disease
Unexplained persistent elevated liver enzymes
Pregnancy and lactation
Age <10 years
Hypersensitivity to atorvastatin
Precautions:
Monitor liver function before and during therapy
Caution with CYP3A4-metabolized drugs
Risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
In diabetes mellitus
In hypothyroidism
With alcohol abuse

CYP3A4 inhibitors (macrolides, azoles, HIV protease inhibitors)

Renal impairment: no dose adjustment
Hepatic impairment: contraindicated
